Nursery Schools
Gardabær has 10 nursery schools for children aged 18 months to 6 years. Five of them are municipal schools – the others are privately run.
All children who have reached the age of 18 months on 1 September are entitled to a place in a nursery school that year. You must fill in a special application form to obtain a place for your child.

Primary schools
There are four primary schools in Gardabær. Icelandic children must attend school between the ages of 6 and 16 years (Classes 1 to 10). Two of Gardabær’s primary schools teach children in Classes 1–7 (6–13 years): Hofsstadaskóli and Flataskóli. One school, Sjálandsskóli, has children in Classes 1–8, while Gardaskóli provides teaching for children in Classes 8–10.
There are also three privately operated primary schools:
The Hjalli Method Primary School, Classes 1–4
The International School, which teaches an international curriculum in English to Classes 1–7
The International Academy of Iceland for foreign students in Classes 8–10 (teaching in English)

Secondary School
Gardabær College offers upper secondary level certificate teaching in a wide range of subjects. Further information can be obtained from the school, tel. 520 1600.
Gardabær Music School
Gardabær Music School is located in the centre of the town. Over 400 students attend in seven departments.
