Gardabaer's cycling policy

Gardabaer's cycling policy was unveiled this spring, and the goal of the policy is to create better conditions for cycling and improve its image so that Gardabaer residents of all ages choose to take more trips by bike.

Cycling as a mode of transportation has increased significantly in recent years, and at the same time, demands for cycling infrastructure have increased.

The strategy is based on the fact that bæjarstjórn Garðabæjar agreed at its meeting on May 5, 2022, to appoint a steering committee to work on a cycling plan for Gardabaer. There was good consultation with various stakeholders at the beginning of the work on formulating the strategy, including sports clubs in Gardabaer and the Icelandic Cyclists' Association.

The steering committee included Hrönn Hafliðadóttir, project manager for planning, Kári Jónsson, sports, leisure and prevention representative, Stella Stefánsdóttir, chair of the environmental committee, and Þorbjörg Þorvaldsdóttir, town councillor.

"Cycling is an environmentally friendly mode of transport that can contribute to improved public health. I therefore welcome Garðabær's first cycling policy, which will guide the planning and construction of Garðabæring's outdoor recreation and transport network so that cycling becomes an accessible, sought-after and safe green option in an attractive environment all year round," says Stella Stefánsdóttir.
Þorbjörg agrees: "It is incredibly satisfying that Garðabær now has its first cycling policy. I look forward to seeing the policy implemented in the coming years, because it is truly a great thing to work on for the public health of Garðabær residents, transportation, and the town's character!"

Cycling conditions in Garðabær are good. The town is centrally located in the capital area, so that a large part of it can be cycled in less than 20 minutes. This is one of the things discussed in the strategy that is valid until 2030. It also discusses the current situation, future goals and other things that affect cycling as a mode of transport.

Vegna miðlægrar staðsetningar Garðabæjar á höfuðborgarsvæðinu er mögulegt að komast á rafmagnshjóli frá miðbæ Garðabæjar að stórum hluta höfuðborgar svæðisins vestan Elliðaáa á innan við 20 mínútum. Á venjulegu reiðhjóli er hægt að komast að flestum hverfum Garðabæjar, Hafnarfjarðar og Kópavogs á sama tíma.
