Actor Jónmundur Grétarsson is the town artist of Garðabær 2026

The Town Artist of Garðabær 2026 was named at a ceremony in Sveinatunga on Garðatorg on May 28th. The Town Artist is actor Jónmundur Grétarsson. On the same occasion, architect Sigurður Hallgrímsson was honored for his invaluable contribution to architecture.
The young people were then awarded a grant from the Incentive Fund for Young Designers and Artists.
The local artist Jónmundur has been acting since he was young and has appeared in numerous plays, television series and films, both in Iceland and abroad. Recently, he has acted in Bústaður in Tjarnarbíó and in Gæðablóður at the National Theatre, for which he is one of the authors. In the work, three Icelanders of color share their experiences of growing up in Iceland.
Jónmundur has been a great role model in speaking out about prejudice and using theatre to make people think about its various manifestations. He is one of the founders of the Elefant theatre group, which consists of young Icelandic actors of mixed origin. Among the works that the group has participated in putting together are Smán and Íslandsklukkan. The latter show received numerous nominations for Grímun.
We congratulate Jónmundur and the people of Garðbæring on their new town artist.
