Hofsstaðaskóli - renovations

Garðabær follows specific procedures if mold is suspected in housing or municipal structures. Engineering firm Cowi (formerly Mannvit) is available to advise on sampling, remediation, and actions.

Case history at Hofsstaðarskóli

1) Samples taken at Hofsstaðarskóli

Following reports of air quality problems at Hofsstaðaskóli, samples were taken in early November 2022 and sent for analysis. According to the results, mold was found under the floor coverings in three classrooms. Mold was also found in dust in two other classrooms, and all five classrooms have been closed. It appears that the mold can be traced back to older moisture damage in the school that had been repaired.

2) Project status

March 2023:A total of 61 material samples and 52 DNA/dust samples have been taken to obtain evidence of whether there was contamination/mold, fungal spores or other particles from moisture damage in the school (see full review). According to the results of the analysis, traces of mold were detected in 18 of 61 material samples and in 23 of 52 DNA/dust samples. Mitigation and renovation measures have been undertaken and the school has already received classrooms and spaces that have been repaired.

January 2023:Following a comprehensive assessment of the school's condition (which began in December 2022) and the results of sampling, the decision was made to close two additional classrooms, a computer lab, and a library.

December 2022:Five classrooms at Hofsstaðaskóli in Garðabær were closed after mold was detected in them following sampling in November 2022. Five portable classrooms were installed at the school in early January.
