The Gardening Department of Garðabær is planting around 15,000 summer flowers this year, of which almost 4,500 will go to Garðatorgið. The summer flowers are placed in containers, beds, pots or flower baskets.

The Horticulture Department will receive the flowers at the end of May. The first task is to prepare the flower baskets that hang on poles in Garðatorg. There are 66 flower baskets and they will hold a total of 1,600 flowers.

"Once the flower baskets are ready, the focus is on completing all other plantings at Garðatorg. The summer flowers are then planted in all the concrete pots that can be seen around the town and finally in pre-determined planting beds," says Jóhanna Kristín Johannsdóttir, a horticulturist at Garðabær.

A wide range of tasks await the horticulture department. "When the summer staff starts to arrive at the beginning of summer, the horticulture department goes full steam ahead because we have many tasks ahead of us. We need to spread fertilizer on all the kindergarten plots, manes, tree beds and open areas. We also prepare the town's vegetable gardens and school gardens for summer activities and prepare all the summer flower beds, stake them up and clear them of weeds. Over the summer, the main tasks of the summer staff are to keep the flower beds clean, prepare and plant summer flowers, prepare flower baskets, street pots and flower beds, sand beds, trim the edges, lay the roof and keep the farm tidy," adds Jóhanna.
