Design March in Garðabær

DesignMarch 2026 will take place May 6-10. DesignMarch is a vibrant platform for ideas, different perspectives and knowledge, where Icelandic and international design meet. There will be a variety of events in Garðabær in connection with DesignMarch.
At the Icelandic Design Museum
On Tuesday, May 5th at 5 pm, four exhibitions will open for DesignMarch 2026. The exhibition Lauf / bike tour traces the journey of Lauf Cycles from initial ideas to an international bicycle manufacturer. Studio Flétta presents the results of their stay in the museum's studio. Designer Anna Gulla shows her creations made from home-grown rye straw and wire on the podium. Inside the Forge, the exhibition !hannannah! will be held, where the Design Museum's educational work will be presented.
Leaf / Bike ride
Lauf Cycles was founded in 2011 by two guys who love cycling the most. They were Benedikt Skúlason, an engineer, and Guðberg Björnsson, a product designer.
The exhibition will explore a 15-year journey that began in a garage in Grafarvogur and has been both challenging, beautiful and fun. It will not only look back but also look forward.

Turmoil
Anna Gulla's Óroarinn are made from homegrown rye straw and wire. She lets her intuition guide her work, using both traditional and unconventional methods to compose the pieces. They take on a spontaneous form that plays with light, balance and tension.
The exhibition is on the Platform at the Icelandic Design Museum and is part of DesignMarch 2026.

!hannannah!
What does the word design actually mean? Who designs and what is designed? A new exhibition opening at DesignMarch gives visitors a glimpse into the educational work at the Icelandic Design Museum for school groups. Every year, around 2,500 students come for a variety of guided tours of the exhibition halls and creative workshops in the educational space. Here we introduce fashion design through dollhouses and interior architecture for imaginary residents. The joy of experimentation, creativity and design thinking are our guiding principles. The educational work is led by Sigríður Sunna Reynisdóttir in collaboration with ÞYKJÓ.

Hiking around Urriðaholt
Urriðaholt has attracted attention for its ambitious planning, which emphasizes the connection between the built environment and nature, diverse open spaces, and good walking and cycling connections within the neighborhood and to the surrounding area. The area's local plan places special emphasis on life between buildings; continuous green areas, paths, and play spaces that connect the neighborhood to the surrounding nature and create a framework for daily mannlíf .

The Icelandic Society of Landscape Architects (FÍLA) is offering a guided tour of Urriðaholt in connection with DesignMarch. The walk will focus on how landscape design, green spaces and play spaces shape the neighborhood and the daily lives of its residents.
The walk begins at Urriðaholtsskóli where the grounds will be inspected. From there, the walk will follow the green connections that run through the settlement and connect the holt with Urriðavatn. Along the way, you will stop at the Urriðaból preschool grounds and explore open areas where you can see how spaces for play, outdoor activities and socializing have been shaped.
The tour will be led by landscape architects who will explain the ideas and designs behind the areas that will be visited and how they form a coherent whole in the planning of the neighborhood. Along the way, the tour will discuss how the spaces between buildings – paths, playgrounds and vegetation – create a platform for daily mannlíf in the neighborhood. The tour will also discuss environmental focuses in the planning of the neighborhood, including blue-green surface water solutions, eco-friendly transportation and the environmental certification of Urriðaholt, which has influenced the shaping of the settlement and open spaces.
Guests will also be provided with a map of the area with marked stops and brief information about what is interesting to see along the way. This allows participants to walk the route at their own pace and stop at places that interest them.
The areas that will be visited are designed by the landscape architecture firms Landslagi, Landformi and Teiknistofa Norðurlands.
The event is open to people of all ages and families with children are especially welcome. The walk takes about two hours.
