Álftaness Women's Association celebrates its centennial

On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the Álftanes Women's Association will offer a birthday cake in the clubhouse at Lambamýri 1 in Álftanes on May 16th.
The Álftanes Women's Association celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 25, 2026. The association was formally founded in Bessastaðir on that day in 1926 and was then called the Bessastaðahreppur Women's Association. The name of the association was changed in 2004 when Bessastaðahreppur became the Álftanes Municipality and the association has been known as Álftanes since then.
To mark the milestone, the Álftanes Women's Association will be offering a birthday cake in the clubhouse at Lambamýri 1 in Álftanes on May 16th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Visit to Bessastaðir
President of Iceland Halla Tómasdóttir welcomed the Álftaness Women's Association on its anniversary and posted a greeting on her Facebook page.
"Yesterday, the Álftaness Women's Association came to visit, but the association was founded in Bessastaðir on April 25, 1926, a full hundred years ago! This was a festive moment, as it is not every day that we celebrate the 100th anniversary of an association that held its first meetings here at the home of the chairman, Elín Vigfúsdóttir. They have always been involved in serving the community, as women's associations all over the country do, and for that we should be grateful," wrote Halla.
