It was a truly joyful moment when the first steps were taken on a new residential complex for people with disabilities at Haustbraut in Hnoðraholt.

It consists of seven residential units, each with a separate entrance. The design of the housing and the project as a whole supports the set goals of independent living and quality of life in the local community.

"It will be exciting to see this important activity given a home here in the highlands of Hnoðraholt, with this unique view in all directions. Exciting times lie ahead and we look forward to starting the next chapter," said Almar Guðmundsson, Mayor of Garðabær, on the occasion. The aim is for the residential complex to be put into use in the fall of 2027.

"We are very pleased with how the design and implementation of the new core has turned out and are excited to have it in use, as hoped, in late 2027. The apartments, which are seven in number, each have a private entrance, a good hallway and spacious storage. They are very bright with high ceilings in the living room and the possibility of having a small terrace in front of each apartment. The staff spaces are well organized and take good care of the operations. It is our belief that the residential core takes good care of the residents and that they will feel good in this warm housing and beautiful environment," says Svanhildur Þengilsdóttir, Director of the Welfare Department of Garðabær, about the project.

Gunnar Valur Gíslason, chairman of the Welfare Council, spoke on the occasion and said that the work behind the project has been very enjoyable. He took the opportunity to thank the staff of the Gardabær Welfare Department and the members of the Welfare Council for their successful collaboration.

Sturla .D Þorsteinsson, representative of the Welfare Council, Svanhildur Þengilsdóttir, director of the Welfare Department, Þorbjörg Þorvaldsdóttir, town councillor and representative of the Welfare Council, Almar Guðmundsson, mayor of Garðabær, Gunnar Valur Gíslason, chairman of the Welfare Council, Björg Fenger, chairman of the town council and Pála Marie Einarsdóttir, head of the department for disabled people, took the first steps towards the new residential complex.
