All elementary school children in Garðabær have now received solar eclipse glasses from Garðabær.

On August 12th, there will be a total solar eclipse and it will be clearly visible from Garðabær. This is the first total eclipse visible from the capital area since June 17th, 1433. To mark the occasion, Garðabær is giving away solar eclipse glasses to kindergarten and primary school children in Garðabær.

Almar Guðmundsson, Mayor of Garðabær, along with representatives from the Department of Education and Leisure, visited all of Garðabær's elementary schools and presented the gifts to the principals. The students were then given the eclipse glasses at the end of the school year.

"It was really fun to go between the schools and hand out the eclipse glasses. During our visits, we saw that the students are eagerly awaiting the total eclipse, as it is a very special event. Now they have the right equipment to observe this amazing natural phenomenon," says Almar.

Educational material on the back of the glasses

On the back of the glasses is a QR code that links to educational material on the website of Sævar Helgi Bragason, better known as Stjörna Sævar.

Sævar says it's important to put on custom-made eclipse glasses when watching the moon move in front of the sun. When the total eclipse hits, it's safe to take them off.

"On solmyrkvi2026.is you will find all the information about the magnificent experience that a total solar eclipse is. Being up at the right time and living under the path of a total solar eclipse is a unique privilege. You will not get the next chance for another 170 years. The solar eclipse glasses provided by Garðabær meet all eye safety requirements. They are to be used to observe the moon slowly moving in front of the sun. When the total eclipse begins, you take off your glasses and look with your bare eyes. When and for how long you can see on the interactive map at solmyrkvi2026.is. Enjoy August 12th! No matter what the weather, the day will be unique and historic,” says Sævar.

In the coming days, preschool children in Garðabær will also receive solar eclipse glasses.
