Traffic accident information
Garðabær would like to provide the following information regarding an incident that occurred earlier this month when a school bus collided with students on their way to school.
As soon as the municipality was notified of the incident, a conversation began with the bus company, but the information provided to parents was clearly not sufficient, which we regret.
The case understandably sparked a strong reaction and is being taken seriously.
Given the occasion, we would like to share the information that is available and report on the next steps.
Following the incident, the principal contacted parents by phone. An email was also sent to all parents of children in the year groups in question. The school immediately contacted the police, who have subsequently spoken to the parents and the bus company. Procedures are in place when incidents like this arise and it is clear that we will carefully review them. The bus company in question has also reviewed its procedures. We believe it is important to learn from this incident and look at where improvements are needed.
The safety and well-being of students and children is always paramount, and the incident, as well as the subsequent responses and communications, will be thoroughly examined with the aim of preventing such incidents from happening again.
The suggestions and criticisms made by parents are fully justified, and Garðabær will in the future invite parents to a meeting to discuss the issues.
