Incentive money
All children aged 5-18, with legal residence in Garðabær, will receive incentive money to pay off fees in organized sports, leisure and youth activities. The amount is 67,000 ISK in 2026.
What is stimulus money used for?
The stimulus money is used, among other things, for:
- Sports and youth activities: Work carried out through recognized sports clubs, summer courses, dancing in dance schools and scouting.
- Music studies: Music studies at the Garðabær Music School and other music schools.
- Organized classes at fitness centers: The grant is valid for organized youth and dance courses.
- Fitness card: 16, 17 and 18 year olds can use the incentive money to purchase cards at fitness centers.
Reason for stimulus money
The reason for these incentive payments is that long-term research shows that children and youth participation in organized activities that last 10 weeks or longer, especially sports and scouting activities, has a significant impact on improved well-being and fewer problems.
Conditions
In order to be able to use the incentive money, a job must:
- to be organized under the guidance of a coach or instructor
- to cover 1 semester or a minimum of 10 weeks
For 5 and 6 year olds, the minimum course duration is 20 lessons, regardless of the number of weeks.
Incentive money for the year 2026 can be used for invoices issued in the years 2025 and 2026. Unused incentive money does not carry over between years and cannot be used to pay invoices for a course that begins the following year.
Additional stimulus money for low-income households
You can apply for additional incentive money (15,000 kr.) in Gardabaer service portal if the total household income is below a certain income limit:
- Individual: under 923,000 ISK per month.
- Cohabitants: under 1,131,000 ISK per month.
The average income is based on the withholding tax register for the last 3 months when applying. The income limit is based on the wage index on January 1, 2026.
Guidelines for using stimulus money
When registering in Abler or XPS
If the club your child is participating in uses the Abler or XPS registration systems, you should use incentive money when registering with the club.
- Once you have logged in, click Courses or Categories available, after the name of the child you are planning to register.
- Find the correct department, category and course and click Course registration.
- Check the box. Using Garðabær's stimulus money. It will then be shown how much incentive money the child has and that amount will be deducted from the training fee. If you do not want to use all of the incentive money, you can change the amount.
- You complete the payment and pay the fee minus the incentive money.
It is not possible to refund or reverse a grant from a company after you have allocated the grant to a company.
Those who train with clubs affiliated with Sportabler or XPS but have paid the full fee can also use the same method explained below to receive incentive money.
