Preschool placement is allocated according to the age of the child. Almost all children who are 12 months old when the school year begins, September 1st of each year, are eligible for preschool placement.
Apply for kindergarten
You can apply for a preschool place as soon as your child has received an ID number. Applications are made through Välä preschool system, whether you choose a preschool run by the town or an independent school.
Conditions: The child must live and have a legal residence in Garðabær and you must not owe preschool fees for an older sibling.
You can choose more than one preschool in your application. Please review the available preschools and familiarize yourself with their work. If there is no vacancy in the preschool in your primary choice, the preschool in your secondary choice will decide, if there is no vacancy there, you will be given a place in a preschool where there is a vacancy.
When is it allocated?
Places are allocated by ID number (age), so the oldest ones get them first. We always try our best to ensure that siblings get a place in the same place.
Most places are allocated in March and April, but enrollment is also steady throughout the year.
Almost all children who are 12 months old when the school year begins (September 1) will receive a preschool place. Parents of those who do not receive a place can apply waiting list payments while waiting for a space.
Confirmation of space
You will receive an email when your child receives a preschool place and have 5 business days to confirm. After that, your child will be removed from the waiting list.
You can apply for a transfer between kindergartens after you have accepted the kindergarten place.
Priority to kindergarten
Children living in special circumstances may be given priority entry to kindergarten. Priority is applied for at the Garðabær Service Portal. In some cases, a certificate from an accredited diagnostic agency must be submitted.
Priority takes into account:
- children with disabilities, severe developmental abnormalities or long-term illnesses
- children who are struggling in a social environment
- disability of parents or siblings or serious illness
- child's involvement in a child protection case
- young parents (18 years and younger)
- The parent has a legal residence in Garðabær and works in a kindergarten in Garðabær at a 75% employment rate or more.
Transfer between kindergartens
Moving between municipalities
Children are expected to attend kindergarten in the municipality where they have legal residence.
Children who move between municipalities in the capital area can remain in their old preschool for up to 6 months if they are on a waiting list for a preschool in the new municipality.
