Instructions

These guidelines apply to children under the age of 12. Please note that these are only guidelines and are subject to the discretion of the guardian. The guidelines are in Icelandic, English and Polish, with translations available in additional languages.

  • It is important that parents and guardians closely monitor weather news, weather forecasts and other recommendations from authorities that could affect children's schoolwork and respond accordingly. Weather and conditions can vary by neighborhood and change quickly and unexpectedly.
  • It is important that people do not set off for school or work if they lack confidence or are unprepared for the journey, for example if the car is not equipped for winter driving.
  • School and after-school activities will not be cancelled unless specifically announced. At the beginning of the school day, there may be a delay in fully staffing schools, and guardians may expect staff to seek their assistance. Guardians are encouraged to take such requests seriously.
  • Guardians always make their own assessment of whether a child needs to be escorted to or from school due to weather conditions, regardless of whether a notification has been received from the authorities. If guardians assess the circumstances to be such that it is not safe for their children to attend school, they should notify the school of what they consider to be an unusual absence. The same applies if children or guardians encounter problems on their way to school and are forced to leave.
