Vocational school
Garðabær Vocational School offers young people in grades 8, 9 and 10 educational and constructive summer work in a safe working environment. Most projects involve gardening and maintenance on the farm, but older young people have the opportunity to work as assistants in kindergartens or on summer courses.

Registration for the Vocational School
All students in grades 8, 9 and 10 who are legally domiciled in Garðabær or are attending schools in the town can register for the Vocational School. Anyone who meets the requirements will be given a job.
Parents register their children at the Vocational School through Choose a vocational schoolLog in with electronic credentials and select Garðabær as your municipality.
Registration for Väla opened on February 15th and will end on May 15th, 2026.
Data for registration
- Bank account. The teenager must have a bank account with their ID number.
- Email addresses. Active email addresses must be provided by the teenager and guardian when registering in Vola, which can be used for communication over the summer.
Special needs and wishes
During the registration process, there is a field marked "Other" where you can fill in requests for special needs and information about your health (especially if it may affect your ability to work) as well as other comments.
Gardening jobs
Most people get work in general groups doing yard work. Teenagers usually work with others from the same school district and of the same age, but it is not possible to guarantee that friends will be grouped together. Information about group placement is published in Väla Work School in early June and a notification is sent by email.
Tutoring jobs for 9th and 10th graders
Teenagers in grades 9 and 10 can request assistance work at institutions and youth clubs when registering. Working hours for assistance work may differ from general gardening groups and be adjusted to the timing of summer courses, some of which run until August.
These jobs are marked as choices in the registration process at Väla Vinnskóli. The workplaces then receive a shortlist and hire the most suitable ones. It is not certain that everyone will get their choice, but it depends on demand and capacity. Confirmation should be made in early June when the organization and scope of the company's summer courses are known.
The organization of support work and recording of working hours is the responsibility of the respective workplace, but if any questions arise, everyone is welcome to contact the Vocational School.
