Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood watch is one of the best ways to prevent burglaries, thefts, and vandalism in residential areas.

What is neighbor watch?

Neighborhood watch is about residents standing together and keeping an eye out for suspicious vehicles and people. If residents become aware of suspicious people, it is best to notify the police by calling 112.

Before you go on vacation

  • Let your neighbors know when you plan to return.
  • Lock all exterior doors.
  • Close the windows and balcony doors and croak again.
  • Do not store ladders or tools on the property.
  • Keep outdoor lights on and change their location with a timer or app if possible.
  • Do not announce your absence from home on social media.
It's a good idea to let your neighbors know if you're going away for an extended period of time.

What a good neighbor can do

  • Keep an eye out for suspicious vehicle and person movements.
  • Make sure mail doesn't accumulate in the mailbox.
  • Put garbage in the trash can.
  • Parked the car in the driveway.
  • Mop the lawn in the summer or shovel snow in the winter.
  • Pull back the curtains every now and then.
  • Light on and off alternately.

Do you want to set up a neighborhood watch?

If you are interested in neighborhood watch in your street or apartment building, you can talk to your neighbors and explore active neighborhood watch activities. Garðabær encourages neighborhood watch activities in the town's neighborhoods by offering meetings with neighborhood watch activities on the agenda.

If you are interested, you can:

  • Create a closed social media page for residents to share information about good neighborly care tips.
  • Hold an information meeting with neighbors and choose a group leader. At the meeting, you can review good advice on neighborhood watch.
  • Group leaders can contact the Garðabær Service Center to obtain neighborhood watch stickers that residents can place in the windows of their houses.
  • You can get a neighborhood watch sign if there is an active neighborhood watch on the street.
  • A group leader can regularly remind neighbors of the importance of good neighborliness, for example by informing new residents about the neighborhood watch and sharing tips through a resident page on social media.
