BREEAM certification ensures that projects meet strict requirements for environmental impact, quality of life and energy efficiency.
The certification is divided into the following categories:

- Social and economic well-being
- Resources and energy
- Land use and ecology
- Transportation and accessibility
Quality of the built environment
Garðabær emphasizes the quality of the built environment in all planning work.
In Garðabær there are two districts with BREEAM certified planning plans:
- Urridaholt
- Vífilsstaðir (Vetrarmýri and Hnoðraholt north).
Planning work for Arnarland is also going through a BREEAM certification process. Planning plans are available on the website Planning Agency.
