Búrfell, Búrfellsgjá and Búrfellshraun

The protected areas of the lava fields of Búrfellshraun, Búrfell, Búrfellsgjá and the eastern part of Selgjá were confirmed by the Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources at the premises of the Icelandic Institute of Natural History on April 30, 2014.

Two protection declarations

  • Garðahraun , Vífilsstaðahraun and Mariúhellar were declared a national park, totaling 156.3 hectares.
  • Búrfell, Búrfellsgjá and the eastern part of Selgjá were protected as natural reserves or unique natural formations, a total of 323 hectares.

In total, the areas that were declared protected are 480 hectares in area.

Gunnar Einarsson, Mayor of Garðabær, and Kristín Linda Árnadóttir, Director of the Environment Agency, signed agreements on the management of the lava fields, Búrfell and Búrfellsgjár between Icelandic Environment and Energy Agency and Gardabaer.

According to the agreement, Garðabær takes over the management of the protected areas and undertakes to protect them and inform the public about their conservation value.

Búrfell and the gorges are within the boundaries of Reykjanes National Park.
