Gálgahraun and Skerjafjörður
Gálgahraun and Skerjafjörður are among the most valuable protected areas in Gardabaer. Both were protected in 2009 with the signing of agreements between Gardabaer and the Minister of the Environment. The protection is part of the town's long-term goal of protecting the Búrfellshraun lava field from the crater to the shore.

Skerjafjordur
Skerjafjörður is a protected habitat, covering coastal and shallow waters on approximately 427 hectares of land and sea. The area is an important stopover for migratory birds and has international conservation value, including for red-breasted gulls and barnacle geese.
The aim of the nature reserve is to protect the area's biodiversity and ensure its recreational and educational value for the future.
Gálgahraun

Gálgahraun is a 108-hectare nature reserve and the northernmost part of the Búrfellshraun lava field, which erupted over 7,000 years ago. The conservation value of the area lies, among other things, in its pristine condition. The area contains geological formations, diverse vegetation, birdlife and cultural relics, such as the ancient Fógetagata and Gálgaklett, an ancient execution site.
