Tree care
Trees are an important part of the local environment in Garðabær and affect safety, appearance and accessibility. With good care, you contribute to healthy growth of vegetation and safe interaction for residents and visitors.
How to care for the vegetation
Trees that grow beyond the property boundaries can cause inconvenience and even create a hazard for pedestrians and drivers. It is therefore important to keep the trees within the property boundaries and ensure good access and safety in the immediate area.
Trees and shrubs at property boundaries, for example at sidewalks, must be trimmed and shaped so that pedestrians can find their way and service vehicles can drive around unhindered. The Gardening Manager of Garðabær conducts an annual assessment of tree vegetation at property boundaries to prevent accidents, damage and other inconveniences. Garden owners and managers of open areas are responsible for ensuring that vegetation does not cause a nuisance to neighbors.
Late winter and early spring are generally the best times to prune, as the branch structure of trees and shrubs is clearly visible. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and improves safety in the surrounding area. Branches that are dead, diseased, or growing in an undesirable direction should be removed, and in some cases, shaping may be necessary.
