Garðabær has installed digital cameras at its institutions where electronic monitoring is deemed necessary for security or asset protection purposes. A total of about 350 security cameras are in use, both indoors and outdoors. Areas that are monitored are clearly marked.

A total of about 350 security cameras are in use, both indoors and outdoors. Areas that are monitored are clearly marked.
The purpose of the monitoring is to:
- prevent damage to town property
- prevent unauthorized access to buildings or other property
- contribute to increased safety
Rules and privacy
Gardabaer's rules on electronic surveillance of security cameras ensure that electronic surveillance is used for security purposes with clear conditions for retention and access to recordings.
The aim of the rules is to ensure proportionality, respect the privacy of those subject to surveillance, and not go further than necessary.
The rules are based on Act on the Protection of Personal Data and the Processing of Personal Data and rules on electronic monitoring.
The rules of the Town of Gardabaer do not apply to systems set up in collaboration with the police and the Emergency Line outside the town's institutions.
