Garðabær operates residential centers and homes that are designed with the needs of disabled people in mind.
Housing for people with disabilities
Special housing is for disabled people with high support needs who cannot find housing in any other way. The housing is designed for those who need a lot of help and support to live in their own home.
Apply for housing
You apply for special housing at the Garðabær Service Portal.
You can only apply for one type of social rental housing at a time. Welfare advisors will guide you through the housing application process.
Who can apply?
In order for an application to be accepted on the waiting list for a specific housing option, you must meet the following:
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You have a confirmed disability diagnosis.
- You have undergone an assessment of your need for specific housing. This can be either Support Needs Assessment (SIS) at the Counseling and Analysis Center in category 5 or higher or an assessment by the welfare department of the need for support in excess of 15 hours per week.
- Your application receives 6 points or more according to social housing regulations.

Garðabær operates homes for disabled people in the following locations:

Residential areas
People with disabilities who need special housing and a lot of support can apply for an apartment in a residential center. There, people receive services according to their needs 24 hours a day.
