Advocacy for people with disabilities

The Rights Watch assists disabled people in achieving their rights when their rights are not guaranteed or violated.

What does the rights watchdog do?

Disabled people can contact the Human Rights Office with anything concerning their rights, finances, and other personal matters. The Human Rights Office then provides guidance or assistance in seeking their rights, as appropriate.

Contact us

You can contact us by calling 554 8100, between 9 am and 4 pm every weekday. Outside of these hours, messages can be read.

You can also send an email to the email address rettindagaesla@mannrettindi.is.

Personal advocate

Disabled people who have difficulty asserting their rights can choose a personal advocate. They help people communicate their wishes.

The advocate helps people protect their rights and other personal issues. Examples of assistance:

  • treatment of healthcare workers
  • choice of residence
  • work and leisure
  • money management

An advocate needs to know the personal needs and interests of the person they are assisting. The job is unpaid, but expenses incurred are reimbursed.
