Residents of Garðabær, 18 years of age and older, who are experiencing temporary financial difficulties can apply for financial assistance. The guiding principle is help for self-help.

Supporting data

  • Tax return and withholding statement: Data for you and your partner. You download the data at tax service website. See instructional video.
  • Information about income and payments: Data from the last 2 months for you and your spouse. This applies to payslips and payments from the Social Security Administration, pension funds, the Directorate of Labour, health funds and the Maternity Leave Fund.
  • Confirmation of employment status
    • Able to work: Confirmation that the right to unemployment benefits has ended or confirmation of registration as a job seeker with the Directorate of Labour.
    • Unemployed: Medical certificate.

Who is entitled to financial assistance?

To be eligible for financial assistance, you must:

  • be 18 years of age or older
  • have legal residence in Gardabaer
  • stay in Iceland while you receive the assistance

Students and financial aid

The general rule is that people with student loans or in credit-eligible studies do not receive financial assistance.

High school students experiencing social difficulties can apply for assistance in the following cases:

  • You are a single parent living independently and your monthly income for the last three months has been less than the basic amount of financial assistance.
  • You have no more than two semesters left of your studies and cannot work with school.

Amount of financial aid

The basic amount of financial assistance is based on daily household expenses. Assets and taxable income of you and your spouse (if applicable) can be deducted. The assistance is taxable, but you can use a personal allowance.

Basic amount (January 1, 2026)

  • Individual in own or rented accommodation: 273,020 kr.
  • An individual who lives with others or does not pay rent: 218,416 kr.
  • Individual living with parents: 136,510 kr.
  • An individual living with parents with custody of a child: 218,416 kr.
  • Married couples and cohabiting partners: 436,832 kr.
