Child welfare

All children have the right to receive the help they need to grow and thrive on their own terms.

Child welfare

Child Welfare in Garðabær is a collaborative project between all schools and sports and leisure clubs in the town. The goal is to work together on a comprehensive policy regarding equality, sexual health and the general welfare of children.

The project is divided into three important components:

  • Procedure and safety: Clear procedures if there is suspicion of violence, neglect or risky behavior in children.
  • Education: Extensive education about violence, equality, gender studies and sexual health that is useful for children, young people, staff and parents.
  • Staff support: Courses for those who work with children, on the one hand about violence, neglect and risky behavior in children and on the other hand about sexual health, equality and self-image.

Procedure for suspected violence, neglect or risky behavior

We place great emphasis on ensuring that everyone knows how to respond if concerns arise about a child's well-being.

Children's well-being

All children have the right to receive the help they need to grow and thrive on their own terms. The Welfare Act ensures that children and parents receive the right help at the right time.

The Law of Prosperity

All children have the right to the services they need when they need them. It can be complicated to know where to turn for help, but the Children's Welfare Act is designed to ensure that appropriate support is easy to access. With integrated services, support is planned and continuous to meet the child's needs at all times.

Prosperity: Conditions that create conditions for a child to achieve physical, psychological, intellectual, moral and social development and health on their own terms for the future.

Success Contact

Parents and children can contact the child welfare liaison to receive appropriate support and services. The liaison's role is to prioritize the child's best interests and work with you.

What happens next?

After you contact us, the needs of the child and family are assessed. The schools have a success team that includes a success liaison, a supervising teacher or department head, and other specialists as needed, such as a school psychologist.

A plan for the next steps is made together. It is re-evaluated regularly to ensure that it is effective. A new path is chosen if necessary.

What support is available?

The support is diverse and takes into account the needs of each child. All schools in Garðabær offer a variety of resources that you can learn about on each school's website. Garðabær also offers resources to support children and their families.

If the challenges are severe or more specialized, the success team, in consultation with you, can assist in seeking support from Child Protection or BUGL.
