Athlete of the Year

The Garðabær Athlete has been nominated since 1982. The selection is announced at the Garðabær Sports Festival, which is held at the beginning of each year.

Awards for achievements in sports

The Sports and Recreation Council oversees the selection of the Athlete of the Year in Garðabær. The public can participate in the election of the Athlete of the Year through an online vote that is specially advertised.

Recognitions are given for:

  • Sportsman from Gardabaer.
  • An athlete from Gardabaer.
  • Coaches of the year.
  • Honorary recognition for contributions to sports and youth affairs.
  • Team of the Year in team sports.
  • National team participation for the first time with the A-team.
  • National team participation for the first time in a competition with a U-team.
  • Success abroad.

Athlete of the Year 2025

  • Coaches of the Year: Gunnhildur Yrsa Jónsdóttir, disabled soccer coach at Stjörnunn, and Vilhjálmur Halldórsson, junior handball coach at Stjörnunn.
  • Honorary recognitions: Guðmundur Jónsson in the Stjörnun handball league and Margrét Tómasdóttir in the Vífli Scout Association and the Spretti Horsemanship Association.
