Youth Council

The Garðabær Youth Council is intended for young people aged 13 to 20 who are legally resident in the town. The council meets monthly and plays an important role in town life.

Role and purpose

The purpose of the Youth Council is to be the voice of young people in Garðabær. The council members ensure that the views of young people are heard when the town's policy is being made. In this way, they receive valuable democratic training, learn about governance in practice, and have a real impact.

The council meets regularly with municipal representatives to discuss issues affecting young people.

What does the Youth Council do?

The council is responsible for a variety of exciting projects. For example:

  • Youth Congress: The council holds a youth conference where young people's ideas and opinions are gathered and acted upon.
  • Child-friendly municipalities: Council members have actively participated in the project. Child-friendly municipalities, which aims to promote the right of children to influence their own lives.
  • Incentive Fund: The council has assisted in allocating funds from an incentive fund for young people.
  • Fighting issue: Recently, special emphasis has been placed on improving facilities for young people. Issues such as youth centers, better transportation, and education have been addressed.

Are you interested in making an impact? When new representatives are elected to the council, it is advertised separately and all young people who meet the requirements are given the opportunity to apply. The municipal council then appoints the representatives.
