Waste sorting
There are generally three bins at each home, one for plastic, one for paper, and the third is divided into two bins for food scraps and mixed waste. Further information on waste sorting is available at flokku.is.
If the garbage does not fit in the bin or it has been compressed in the bin so that it does not fall out when emptied, the garbage will be left behind and the homeowner must take it to the nearest recycling center.
Food leftovers

Households can get a basket and paper bag for leftover food at the nearest Sorpa station. Plastic or corn bags may not be used as they do not decompose.
The following items go in the organic bin, among other things:
- leftovers
- eggshell
- coffee basket
- fish waste and bones
On private farms, the bin is divided into two sections with mixed waste. Organic waste is disposed of every 14 days.
Mixed waste

The mixed waste bin includes, among other things:
- sanitary napkin
- wet wipes
- diapers
- vacuum cleaner bags
At private homes, the bin is divided into two parts for organic waste. Mixed waste is discharged every 14 days.
Plastic

The plastic bin includes:
- snack bags
- plastic wrap
- plastic bags
- shampoo bottles
- plastic packaging
The plastic bin is emptied every 21 days.
Paper and cardboard

The following items go in the paper and cardboard bin, among other things:
- newspapers
- letter bags
- pizza boxes
- paper packaging
The paper bin is emptied every 21 days.
Location of barrels
It is best to have trash cans in built-in garbage bins, otherwise they need to be securely fastened. It is important that there is good access to the bins so that it is easy for garbage collectors to reach them.
Criteria
- Bins should be on the street side of houses.
- Location is at most 7 meters from the place where a garbage truck can stop.
- You shouldn't have to carry them up and down stairs (if possible).
- It is the responsibility of homeowners to clear snow from garbage cans and clear the path that needs to be taken with bins to the street.
If you place a barrel in a location other than specified by the standards, you must return the barrel to such a location on the day of discharge.
Order a new barrel
You order new barrels at the Garðabær Service Portal.
Barrels for a new house
In new buildings where there has not been a garbage collector before, owners must order garbage cans or deep containers in Gardabaer service portal. The cost of new bins and containers is included in the garbage collection fee, which is part of the property taxes.
Add or edit trash cans
You can order additional barrels or change barrels to Gardabaer service portalBarrels are charged according to the tariff and an administration fee is also charged for changes.
Dual bins for plastic and paper
You can choose to get a dual-compartment bin for plastic and paper.
- The capacity of the barrel is 240 liters.
- The barrel is split in a ratio of 60/40.
- The smaller compartment is 96 liters (plastic) and the larger compartment is 144 liters (paper and cardboard).
To get a dual-compartment bin for plastic and paper, you must agree that if the bin is overfilled or the waste has been compacted so that it does not fall out during disposal, the waste will be left behind. In that case, you must take the waste to a recycling center.
