Vegetable gardens

Garðabær offers residents the opportunity to grow vegetables in organized gardens during the summer. There are also school gardens available for children where they get the opportunity to learn about growing vegetables, being outdoors, and interacting with nature.
Link to park rentals opens at 08:30 Thursday, May 21st for the summer of 2026.

Vegetable gardens in Gardabaer

  • The rental will open at 08:30 on Thursday, May 21, 2026. A link will then be available here directly to the application website for the vegetable boxes.

Gardeners have the opportunity to rent vegetable boxes to grow vegetables during the summer. Vegetable gardens are located in Hæðahverfi, in Álftanes and at two locations in Urriðaholt.

Main information

  • The rental period is from mid-May to October 15th (individual vegetable boxes are available until September 15th). Renters will receive an email when it is possible to start growing in the gardens.
  • Vegetable boxes are 2 x 4 meters in size, or 8 m², and marked with numbers.
  • Water for irrigation is available in all areas.
  • Garden tools, plants and seeds are not included.
  • Rental price in the summer of 2026 - will be 5,500 kr for renting a vegetable box.
  • The rental will open at 08:30 on Thursday, May 21, 2026. A link will then be available here directly to the application website for the vegetable boxes.

Each person can only rent one vegetable box. At the end of the rental period, all vegetables must be picked up and the boxes returned empty.

Where are the vegetable gardens?

On Gardabaer map website You can see the locations of vegetable gardens by selecting Services and entertainment in the menu on the right and check Vegetable gardens.

Hillside neighborhood

There are 41 vegetable boxes available in Hæðahverfi. Access to the area is south of the Hæðarból preschool.

Alftanes

At Álftanes there are 10 vegetable boxes next to the artificial turf field. Access is from Breiðamýri.

Urriðaholt - Kauptún

There are 10 vegetable boxes at Kauptún. Access is from the parking lot in Kauptún and a footpath leads to the boxes.

Urriðaholt - below Dýjagata

Below Dýjagata there are 47 vegetable boxes. Access is from the bottom of Dýjagata and Kinnargata.

Schoolyards in Silfurtún

Children are given the opportunity to learn about farming, outdoor activities and interacting with nature in a lively and fun way at the School Gardens in Silfurtún. The gardens are intended for children aged 6–13 and are open during the summer.

The school gardens are located in Silfurtún, with access to the Bæjarból preschool. A supervisor is on site to assist the children.

Main information

  • Schoolyards are open on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • The gardens are not daycare.
  • Registration will take place on site from June 2nd.
  • A materials fee of ISK 5,500 is paid.
  • Older people are offered the opportunity to rent a garden in the school gardens after June 6th.
