Last October, a collaborative project between the Housing and Public Works Authority (HMS), the Icelandic Confederation of Industrialists (ASÍ) and the Capital Region Fire Department (SHS) entitled "Safe Housing for All" was launched, with the aim of mapping residential accommodation in commercial buildings. The project began with a mapping of the capital region, which has now been completed, and detailed results can be found in a report that was subsequently prepared.

In the coming years, 1,800 streetlights in Garðabær will be replaced with better lights, with more durable and energy-saving light bulbs, as well as with higher light quality. Work will begin this year to replace about 500 lights with mercury bulbs that are on children's paths and near schools.
