Garðabær emphasizes providing excellent service to its residents, and part of that is ensuring that residents can easily express their views.

There is great value in mobilizing the town's residents to participate in the town's work and affairs, and they can have an impact in various ways.

Local elections will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Our goal is for all residents of Garðabær to be able to actively participate.

You can…

  • Send us an email at gardabaer@gardabaer.is and the matter will be forwarded to the right place
  • Write comments on news on Garðabær's social media. We are on Facebook, Instagram and TikTokYou can also send us a message there.
  • Attend open resident meetings that are held regularly, where residents can express their views
  • Submit ideas when consultation projects take place and vote on other proposals through a consultation portal.
  • Write a letter to the Garðabær Town Council. The Town Council meets on Tuesday mornings at 08:00. Items that are to be submitted for the next Town Council meeting must be received by us no later than noon on the Friday before. You can send the letter by post or email.
  • Submit a tip through the Gardabær tip portal
  • Make an appointment with the mayor by calling 525 8500 or meet with the mayor during open appointment hours offered at regular intervals.

Gardabaer's Democratic Policy

Gardabaer's democratic policy is based on three main goals: participation, knowledge, and development.

Gardabaer's revised democracy policy was published in February 2022 and is based on three main goals: participation, knowledge and development. The democratic strategy of Garðabær sets the stage for successful future collaboration between elected representatives, administration, residents and other stakeholders through a strong culture of consultation; debate, dialogue, consultation and information sharing. This will be done with positivity, professionalism and reliability as the main focus.

Population surveys

In recent years, Garðabær has participated in Gallup's annual service survey. The aim of the survey is to examine satisfaction with service in the 20 largest municipalities in the country and make comparisons as well as examine changes from previous surveys.

The results provide valuable insight into residents' attitudes towards the services provided by the town.

Latest results

The Gallup company conducted a service survey among residents of the country's largest municipalities at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, asking about attitudes towards municipal services. You can read the results here.

Better Garðabær

Better Garðabær is a consultation project between residents and the administration on prioritizing and allocating funds for smaller projects in the local area of residents in Garðabær. The project is based on mobilizing the public to participate in democratic discussion and decision-making.

A better Garðabær as a whole is in four phases:

  • Brainstorming
  • Discussion of ideas and processing
  • Electronic voting
  • Project implementation

Better Garðabær consultation project are set up at regular intervals and then carefully introduced to the population.
