Preschool fees are subsidized by Garðabær, but parents pay part of the costs, including meals. Preschool fees are according to the current fee schedule.
You can apply for a cancellation of preschool fees if your child is on vacation during the following periods:
- Optional vacation weeks (1–2 weeks) – minimum 5 consecutive days.
- Winter break – 4 consecutive days in February.
- Christmas break – weekdays between Christmas and New Year's.

Assumptions and explanations
• Valid from January 1, 2026. Accommodation 20–40 hours/week.
• Income-related discount: 40% of the general accommodation fee (not of the food fee). Reference income: 923,000 ISK/month (individual) and 1,131,000 ISK/month (cohabiting couple).
• Sibling discount: 50% of the fee for each child over one and 75% for each child over two (full-price meals).
• Rules for payments for children's stay at preschools not run by Garðabær (paid for 11 months; gross figures minus collected fees).

Families with children and low-income parents may be entitled to discounts on preschool fees.

Discount for kindergarten staff
Preschool staff receive a 40% discount on preschool fees. The discount is an incentive for people to work in their home communities and increases the stability of preschool staffing. The conditions for the discount are that the employee is qualified, is employed for at least a year, and has an employment rate of 70-100%.
Payments
Payments
Payment is made monthly in advance. The due date is the 1st of each month and the due date is 10 days later. Preschool fees are collected for 11 months a year, with July being a fee-free month (defined as summer vacation).
Fees can be paid by online banking or credit card.
Collection history due to delinquency
- If your accommodation fees are still unpaid 10 days after the due date, you will receive a collection alert.
- If payment has not been received 70 days from the due date, the preschool principal will be informed of the status of the arrears. The preschool principal will contact you and encourage you to make payments.
- If payment has not been received 90 days after the due date, you will be sent a termination notice on your residence agreement. This notice states that you have 30 days to complete the payment before the termination takes effect.
Debt
If parents are in arrears for 3 months, the child's preschool stay will be terminated. When the termination letter is delivered, parents have the opportunity to negotiate the unpaid fees.
Cancellation of a preschool place
Notice period
The mutual notice period is 1 month and is based on the 1st or 15th day of each month. Parents cancel their preschool stay at Þjónustugátt Garðabær.
