Elementary school community centers
The social centers of Garðabær offer children and adolescents aged 10–16 a variety of félagsstarf . They offer opportunities for socializing and engaging in healthy leisure activities under the guidance of experienced instructors. There is a lot of good cooperation between the social centers and students are free to apply for work in all of them.

The role of community centers
The role of community centers is to support children and adolescents through diverse leisure activities, team building, and group work.
The goal is to create opportunities for socializing and engaging in healthy leisure activities under the guidance of experienced leisure instructors. The guiding principle of the work is to strengthen the social skills and self-image of children and adolescents, thereby contributing to their positive development and well-being.
The work is based on the ideology of child and youth democracy, where the voice of young people and their interests are the guiding principle when shaping the work and planning events.
There is a lot of good cooperation between community centers in Garðabær, and students are free to apply for jobs in all of them.
The role of the director
The director manages the community center and is responsible for its work. He supports the students and assists them in preparing for their work.
Director's tasks
- Prevention: Prevention issues with a student counselor.
- Schoolwork: Tasks such as group work and team building as needed.
Community center operating rules
The goal of staff is to ensure the well-being and safety of all children and youth in their work. Others should be treated with kindness and respect, and everyone is welcome to community centers on their own terms.
