Planning inquiry
Garðabær's planning work is based on current planning laws and national and regional planning policies when applicable.
Planning Department
The Planning Department of the Environment Division provides information and advice on planning matters to residents, municipal representatives, consultants, designers and contractors. The Planning Director handles planning matters and acts on behalf of the municipal council.
Send an inquiry or application for a change in organization
You can submit an inquiry or a formal application to the planning committee. The message may, for example, concern:
- Changes to master plan or zoning plan.
- Changes or design of the plot.
- Location and size of cottages.
- Changes and locations of individual activities.
- Demolition of buildings and other structures.
- Change in the number or arrangement of parking spaces.

Environmental Department staff provide further information on planning issues and the planning process.
Application for zoning change
The application must include:
- zoning plan amendment plans
- photocopy of the solder sheets
- diagrams if necessary
Fees for planning work and issuing a construction permit are according to the fee schedule.
Planning manager's briefing meetings
Inquiries and applications are submitted at the planning manager's processing meetings, which are usually held every two weeks.
For a matter to be considered at a processing meeting, sufficient data must have been received no later than the end of the day on Thursday the week before the meeting.
Planning Committee Meetings
Planning committee meetings are usually held every two weeks, on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.
For an issue to be considered at a planning committee meeting, sufficient data must be received no later than the end of the day on Thursday the week before the meeting.
Office of Planning Director
The Planning Director operates in accordance with the Planning Act, Planning Regulations and the Municipal Council's decision on official procedures, as well as other laws, regulations and decisions on planning matters in Garðabær.
