About Hofsstaðarskóli
A new website for Hofsstaðaskóli is in development and will be launched later this year.
Hofsstaðaskóli has 450 students in grades 1-7 and employs around 90 staff with the aim of nurturing the students academically and socially and catering to their interests and abilities. The students and staff are well looked after and all facilities at the school are exemplary.
The school carries out ambitious work that is constantly evolving. Teaching methods are diverse and the well-being of students is paramount in the spirit of Garðabær's educational policy. Literacy is a major focus and services for students with special needs are strong.
Learning environment
Emphasis is placed on creating a positive school atmosphere and ensuring that a good working spirit prevails. Everyone who works at the school promotes and maintains a good working spirit where safety, well-being and health are paramount. Mutual trust, respect, shared responsibility and consideration are the guiding principles. The curriculum is characterized by taking into account the needs of students, their development and abilities with an emphasis on human rights, equality, democratic working methods and not accepting discrimination of any kind. The Gardabæjar Communication Charter, Uppeldur til Þarráður and KVAN procedures are all useful in this work. School rules and procedures for disciplinary matters are reviewed and established. A new professional team for intervention will undoubtedly be of great use.
The 2025 – 2026 school year will be characterized by a review of the National Curriculum Guide and the implementation of changes to it. The review is undoubtedly beneficial and a wealth of support materials and procedures that come with it will make school work easier. In parallel, assessment and its presentation are being reviewed. The School Committee for Compulsory Schools has called for increased coordination between schools and work will be done in that spirit.
Hofsstaðaskóli employees emphasize professional work methods and providing students and parents/guardians with a strong service based on knowledge and experience. Therefore, there is a strong emphasis on continuing education of employees and diverse professional development. Hofsstaðaskóli is a learning community, and the continuing education of employees is partly individualized and based on the needs of each individual.
Diverse teaching methods that meet the different needs of students are a major project and guided learning continues to be used as part of this and this school year, outdoor teaching is to be increased, which includes many opportunities for different approaches and diversity. Support services are strong at the school and more professionals have been added to the staff, such as a behavioral counselor and a school social counselor.
