About Álftanesskóli

A new website for Álftanesskóli is under development and will be launched later this year.

The first phase of Álftanesskóli was put into use in the fall of 1978. Before that time, schools had been operating in Bessastaðir since 1880, Bjarnastaðaskóli operated from 1889 to 1978, and was housed in Bjarnastaðir. The school has expanded in parallel with the increase in population and students. Since the fall of 1998, Álftanesskóli has been a single-family home.

Today, Álftanesskóli is a single-site, comprehensive primary school for students in grades 1–10. The school museum and the Álftaness/Garðabær Library are jointly operated in the school building. After the school day for students in grades 1–4, an afternoon care program, Frístund, is offered. The school operates according to the National Curriculum Guide, the municipality's school policy, and the school's school curriculum.

  • In the 2025-2026 school year, there are 387 students at the school and about 75 employees.
  • The school opens at 7:45 and classes begin at 8:15/8:25, ending at 1:15/2:00 or later for those in electives.
